Some categories of double and multiple star systems contained in the Input Catalogue of some 100,000 stars, that has been prepared for observation by the astrometric satellite Hipparcos are described and discussed. The main feature of a Hipparcos observation of a binary lies in the fact that it may only give for each scan the projection of the apparent distance between the components in the scanning direction. Astrometric binaries by ground-based techniques are compared to those by the Hipparcos techniques. It is shown that discovery, systematic measurements, and orbital computations of astrometric binaries are based on the position of the photocenter of the photographic images of the system. The relative motion in a binary system observed only by Hipparcos is measured and computed.
