The unprecedented sensitivity of the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) has allowed mid-IR spectra and photometry to be determined for good samples of red giant stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Mid-IR photometry has also been obtained for Asymptotic Giant Branch stars in other Local Group galaxies by the SST and the VLT. All these stars have well known distances as well as a range in mass, luminosity and metal abundance. I will describe the results of mass loss determinations for them from the mid-IR observations. I will also describe recent results related to mass loss from the approximately one third of low and intermediate mass stars that are born in binary systems which are close enough that the stars in them will fill their Roche lobes before the end of the AGB.
