We present evolutionary models of rotating stars that account for both the ultra-fast and the slow rotators observed in young star clusters. We also report on the results of a monitoring campaign aimed at deriving photometric rotation periods for a substantial sample of stars in young open clusters. These observations are interpreted in the light of the evolutionary models.
