In preparation of an extensive investigation of the morphological properties of late type galaxies, an examination is conducted as to whether the on-film copies of the IIIa-J plates of the ESO/SRC Survey are suitable for the determination of relative intensities within galaxies. For the transformation of the densities measured to relative magnitudes, the photometric wedges on the films were used. By comparing the brightness distributions of galaxies in overlapping regions of each two films, it was found that the accuracy of the magnitude scales and the accidental errors due to grain structure on the films are similar to good original plates (at least within areas up to 20-arcmin diameter).
