After determining the location and estimating the volume of regions which are void of galaxies in a sample complete to mz ≤ 14.5, the authors compare the observed volume-distribution with the distribution estimated in simulations generated according to the model of Soneira-Peebles. The numerical analysis and a rather approximated analytical approach show that (1) the voids observed in the sample used do not contradict a hierarchical distribution of matter in the Universe and (2) even the presence of large voids as the one claimed in Bootes could be explained in a hierarchical realization.
