In April and May of 1996, we observed the Hubble Deep Field for ten consecutive nights at J,H and K(short) using the 4m Mayall telescope and the IRIM camera at KPNO. The observations reach 5-sigma limiting magnitudes of approximately J=23.5, H=22.3, and K=21.9 (within a 2 arcsec diameter aperture) over the entire HDF area. The images have been made available to the astronomical community via the HDF WWW site at STScI. Here we present a description of the observations and data, as well as a basic characterization of the near infrared properties of the HDF galaxy population.
