We observed GRO J1849-03, a recently discovered hard x-ray transient, using the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on SAX (Satellite per Astronomia X) in an energy band from 2 to 30 keV. GRO J1849-03 was discovered with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). Periodic hard x-ray (20-100 keV) outbursts, which typically last 11 days and have peak fluxes of 70 mCrab were observed with 241 +/- 1 days between outbursts. The periodicity and the energy spectrum of the outbursts suggest that this source is a binary system containing a Be star and a neutron star; however, it should be noted that hard x-ray outbursts with spectra similar to this source have been observed in accreting black hole systems. The BATSE 95% confidence error box extends over 2 square degrees. Further investigation of this source requires a more accurate position. To this end, an observation of the source was made with the WFC on SAX scheduled to coincide with the predicted time of an outburst. We present the results of the observation.
