Data measurements on the surface of a sphere can be modelled by spherical harmonic analysis. However, simply finding a least-squares fit to the data often gives unsatisfactory results. Fougere refined the least-squares method in 1963, to model the geomagnetic field, but the improvements offered by his technique are limited. Inverse theory provides a fascinating overview to problems like this one, and has been recently applied by Gubbins to spherical harmonic analysis, also of geomagnetic data. Both methods are described here, and compared using synthetic data.
