There is a growing body of astronomical evidence that confirms the big bang model. In the hot big bang model, the density of the universe determines its geometry. The astronomical data suggest that the matter density of the universe is low. This implies that either there is some new form of matter or energy that does not cluster gravitationally (e.g. a cosmological constant) or that we live in an negatively curved universe.
