Scientific paper

We report on the detection of low energy gamma-rays from the Vela Supernova remnant at the ~9σ level with the OSSE instrument on CGRO during an observation from 31 August to 20 September 1994. The source has a power law photon spectral index of ~-1.6+/-0.3 in the energy range ~0.06MeV to ~0.4MeV. Contamination by the galactic plane was found to be insignificant. This spectrum is perfectly consistent with an extrapolation of the E^-1.7^ spectrum of the ~1' radius compact nebula surrounding the Vela Pulsar, as seen between 0.1-25keV with imaging instruments.
