Most modern ways of measuring gravitational waves come down to timing in one way or another. In principle two ultra-stable clocks or one such clock and a mirror would suffice. When clocks of the required stability are not available, averages over many clocks can do the same. Pulsar timing employs this method to search for gravitational waves passing the earth. Observations of other objects can be used if the line of sight passes through a region of strong gravitational waves. A random background of gravitational waves could in principle disturb the apparent astronomical reference frame. I will review what is understood about all these issues.
