Recent developments in clock technology have made it possible to provide time and frequency with unprecedented precision in the laboratory. The challenge of comparing these devices at a distance remains, however. A critical component in transferring time and frequency is the consideration of the relativistic aspects of time comparisons. For example, the operational application of relativity is perhaps no better demonstrated than in the everyday use of global navigational satellites. This aspect along with other considerations in the precise transfer of time and frequency are presented.
