We have mapped the IRAS 4-SVS 13 region in the NGC 1333 star-forming complex in the SiO v=0 lines at 3, 2, and 1.3 mm using the IRAM 30 m telescope. In addition to high-velocity components associated with protostellar activity in IRAS 4 and other sources, we report the detection of an extended layer of gas at ambient velocities, traced by an extremely narrow and fairly bright component ( Delta v=0.4-1.2 km s-1, TB=2 K). The SiO abundance in that layer is typically 1-3x10^{-10} . This is 2 orders of magnitude lower than in the high-velocity flows but about 2 orders of magnitude higher than the abundance in quiescent clouds. Several mechanisms that could account for such emission are briefly discussed: high-temperature chemical reactions in the gas surrounding the protostellar wind of SVS 13 and interaction between the neighboring protostellar outflows and local small gas condensations in the vicinity of IRAS 4.
