To date, positions of more than 4000 compact radio sources were determined with the milliarcsec accuracy using VLBI. The vast majority of these sources was observed in a dedicated survey campaigns. The overview of past and currently running survey campaigns is given. The technology of conducting astrometric surveys, their goals, the strategy for source selection, data analysis strategy and results are presented.
