Reference frames determined from measurements of extragalactic and solar system objects are used in interplanetary navigation, earth orientation measurements, geodesy, and astrometry. The extragalactic frame is derived solely from Very Long Baseline Interferometric (VLBI) measurements of compact radio sources, while the solar system frame is derived from a variety of range measurements to the inner planets and the moon. We present evidence that, within the spans of presently available observations, each frame exhibits approximately one milliarcsecond (mas) internal precision and is characterized by coordinate drifts which are uncertain by < 1 mas/yr. Next we discuss the connection between these two frames, reviewing several methods that have been used to link the two frames with 5-10 mas uncertainty, and examine prospects for future improvements in interconnection accuracy.
