I have studied the evolution of cataclysmic variable systems using a full stellar model for the secondary and treating the mass transfer in a self-consistent way. I find that to obtain a minimum orbital period near 80 m as observed, a torque acting on the orbit 3 times that due to gravitational radiation is required. As regards the 2 h-3 h period gap, I find that a disrupted torque model can produce the period gap. The adjustment of the structure and the 3He mixing as the secondary becomes fully convective does not produce a period gap. And I find it unlikely that there exist two distinct populations of cataclysmic variables-one with orbital periods greater than 3 h and another population with orbital periods between 80 m and 2 h.
