Molecular absorption lines can give very detailed information on the chemical and physical conditions in the dense and cold interstellar medium in external galaxies. The sensitivity depends to first order on the strength of the background continuum source and the method allows observation of several molecular species not observable using emission line observations. On the other hand molecular absorption lines probe a small region of the interveing galaxy and only provides information over a small spatial extent. In this presentatiuon I will review the known molecular absorption line systems both in our nearby universe and at intermediate redshift what we have learned about the molecular chemistry and the small scale structure of the gas itself. Furthermore the future outlook with respect to forthcoming telescopes and instruments will be discussed.
