The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy - SOFIA - is an observatory with a 2.5 meter telescope in a Boeing 747SP aircraft being developed by NASA and DLR. SOFIA will operate over a 20 year lifetime flying into the low-stratosphere to allow astronomical measurements covering the wavelength range from 0.3 microns to 1.6 mm with an emphasis on the spectral regions inaccessible from the ground such as the 6-8 micron and 30-300 micron regions.
SOFIA will support a diverse and changing complement of state-of- the-art science instruments with spectral resolutions ranging from 108 down to 100 designed to measure absorption and emission features of astrophysically and astrochemically significant atoms ions molecules aerosols and solids.
This paper will give an overview of some of the high-spectral resolution investigations expected to be performed on SOFIA. We will also describe the spectrometers to fly on SOFIA soon after first light and a projection of those that will fly over the lifetime of SOFIA.
SOFIA will see ""first light"" in 2004. The science program will start in 2005.
