Scientific paper

With the successful launch of ESA's INTEGRAL satellite in october 2002 a gamma-ray observatory has become available to the scientific community which for the first time combines excellent imaging and spectroscopic capacities in the 20 keV to 10 MeV energy range. Depending on availability in this early stage of scientific exploitation I will present first results obtained with the high-resolution Germanium spectrometer SPI and place them in a scientific context. Future prospects for high resolution spectroscopy will be explored with particular emphasis on the promising technique of gamma-ray focusing using Bragg crystal lenses.
