CHIANTI is a database of atomic data and transition rates necessary for calculating synthetic spectra and carrying out plasma diagnostics of astrophysical sources in the X-ray EUV and UV wavelength ranges. CHIANTI includes both line and continuum emission from all astrophysically abundant elements in the universe. All data are taken from refereed literature and are critically assessed. CHIANTI also includes a suite of IDL programs that allow spectroscopic analysis to be carried out. CHIANTI data and software are freely distributed over the internet.
In the present talk I will describe the contents of the CHIANTI database its current status and the areas where CHIANTI is being developed and I will also present a comparison of CHIANTI predictions with the X-ray emission from astrophysical sources.
