The aim of the international Iron Project (IP) is the development of theoretical methods and large-scale computations for radiative and collisional processes in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. We present an overview of recent work carried out as part of IP and extensions thereof applicable to the analysis of X-ray spectra. The calculations are carried out using an extensive suite of codes based on the relativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix method. In particular we will discuss the work on atomic physics and X-ray models by the Ohio State group on (i) data for He-like and Ne-like ions (ii) K-alpha spectral formation (ii) self-consistent and unified calculations for photoionization and recombination including radiative and di-electronic recombination and (iv) X-ray monochromatic opacities and spectral modeling.
