If the standard models of galaxy formation are to be believed (most noteably Cold Dark Matter) small dwarf galaxies are the oldest structures in the Universe and are presumed to be the building blocks of larger galaxies such as our own and M31. There are predicted to be very numerous remanents of these early structures around larger galaxies such as our own in the form of dwarf galaxies.
We can study the properties of dwarf galaxies around our Galaxy in exquisit detail by looking at their individual stars; many of which were born at the earliest times in the Universe and have survived until the present day. From high resolution spectroscopy we can use nucleosynthetic properties to understand the star and metal formation histories of these galaxies from the earliest epoches up to the present time.
In my talk I will give an overview of our understanding of dwarf galaxies observed in our Local Universe concentrating on recent VLT abundance measurements of individual stars.
