The DIRECT project carried out a synoptic BVI survey of M31 and M33 primarily using the FLWO 1.2-m telescope on 170 nights from 1996 to 1999. The survey covered about 1500 and 1200 square arcminutes in M31and M33 respectively to a depth of V=23 mag. Most of the survey fields have been analyzed yielding about 1000 Cepheids 200 eclipsing binaries and 800 miscellaneous variables.
I will review the results of the survey and discuss four promising detached eclipsing binary systems located in these galaxies. Lastly I will present preliminary results of spectroscopic observations obtained with the Keck telescopes.
