The environments of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are often also the regions of greatest gas concentration and star formation in galaxies. The symbiotic relationship between the circum-nuclear gas the associated star formation and the inflow jets and photoionisation associated with the AGN provides for very rich gas-phase physics. I will discuss some of these aspects insofar as they relate to the temporal evolution of both the nuclear star formation region and of the AGN.
