Scientific paper

The spectrum of the sdO star HD 49798 was monitored for a week in 1995 December with the Helen Sawyer Hogg Telescope of the University of Toronto Southern Observatory. The resolution of the spectra is 1.7 Å pixel^-1. A new spectral type of sdO5.5 has been determined. Some subtle changes may be attributable to the X-ray pulsating companion, but no gross changes were observed on timescales of days, hours, or tens of minutes.
