OH maser sources of type I, which are related to regions of star formation, have been known for more than a decade. However, despite great effort no satisfactory theoretical interpretation has yet been given. A model for the interpretation of type I OH maser sources is suggested here. This model combines the effect of velocity and magnetic field gradients with radiative pumping by means of the (2 Pi 3/2, J equals 5/2 to 2 Pi 1/2, J equals 5/2) transition. Due to an overlap of particular hyperfine components, inversion of the 1665 MHz line is favored.
