Evidence suggesting the presence of the solid, conjugated linear carbon compound carbyne in the interstellar dust is discussed. The discovery of carbyne in the carbonaceous chondrites Murchison and Allende, and the finding that carbyne can be synthesized at low temperatures and in environments not particularly rich in carbon are considered to widen substantially the number of possible sources of carbyne dust. Theoretical considerations are then presented which indicate that the spectral properties of the singly and triply bonded molecule may be responsible for some unidentified features in infrared astronomical spectra associated with the interstellar dust.
