Five fields with diameters ranging from 0°.5 to 1°.0 and situated close to the galactic equator in the galactic longitude interval 290° to 330° have been investigated with respect to interstellar reddening and stellar distribution. In total 1087 stars brighter than about B = 13m have been photoelectrically observed in UBV and classified on objective prism plates or by means of two-colour diagrams. Their individual spectro-photometric distances have been determined and used in the analysis.
Most of the reddening occurs within 0.8 kpc from the Sun, with a colour excess of 0m.3 in B-V. In two of the fields (in Carina and Crux) there is no additional reddening out to 4 kpc.
The numbers of early type stars decrease with the galactic longitude in the interval studied, with no OB stars in Norma, where on the other hand the richness in A-F stars is striking.
Eight clusters have been investigated, one of them previously unknown, and their mean colour excesses, distances, earliest spectral types and other parameters have been determined.
