Ariel 5 hard X-ray data is searched for evidence of cyclotron line features in the emission of Her X-1, Cen X-3 and GX 301-2 during selected periods in 1975 and 1977. Only in the case of the 1977 February observation of Her X-1 is there a probable identification of a line flux and re-analysis of the data yields a flux of (2.8+2.4-2.1) × l0-3 ph cm-2 s-1, centred at 70 ± 10 keV. The three sigma upper limit on possible Her X-1 line fluxes above 100 keV lies at 5 × l0-3 ph cm-2 s-1. In the case of GX 301-2 this limit is at 2 × 10-3 cm-2 ph s-1 between 50 and 120 keV and for Cen X-3 it lies between 7 and 20 × l0-3 ph s-1 at various epochs and energies. These results are compared with those of other workers for the period 1975-78.
The well known hard tail above 30 keV in the spectrum of Sco X-1 is treated as a line feature and variability of the 30-7 keV flux in the range 2 to 7 × 10-2 ph cm-2 ph s-1 demonstrated over an observing period of about 12 years.
