A comprehensive study of single pulse intensities on the time scale of milliseconds was made for 36 radio pulsars at several frequencies. In spite of a large subpulse width variation of about 50% around the mean for individual single pulses, we find a strong relation between mean properties of subpulses and integrated pulse profiles so that various functional dependences for subpulses and integrated pulses are similar. The subpulse width depends on period significantly steeper than found by other authors. Subpulse width and spacing shrink with increasing frequency. It is found in general that strong subpulses are narrower on the average than weak subpulses. It is shown that the millisecond structure can be interpreted as being due to a sweep of the beam past the observer rather than to an intrinsic time variability of the emission.
