It is shown that when a cepheid has a binary companion luminous enough to affect the cepheid's photometric properties, the phase of minimum in the (U - V) curve is shifted to an earlier phase than the phase of minimum in the V light-curve. To first order, the effect appears independent of shape or amplitude of the light-curve as well as of reddening and period. It is found possible to quantify the effect, so that the magnitude difference between the cepheid and its companion can be determined on average to within 0.2 mag from the phase shift of the (U - V) curve.
