Counts down to B = 21m of 163,000 stars in the outer parts of the SMC towards the south-west and north-east have been performed and their radial distribution analysed. Disk and halo stars have been effectively separated, and very different distributions of the two populations are demonstrated. The disk stars are closely correlated with neutral hydrogen, and are themselves of two distinct varieties, namely the bar population and the arm population. The star formation rate appears to be greater in the arms than in the bar; this is interpreted as being due to a differing history of star formation in the two regions, the bar being a seat of continuous star formation and the arms the location of star formation in bursts. The halo of the SMC is strongly biased towards the western part of the Cloud compared with the centre of the disk. Its composition, however, appears to be the same on both sides. It is also shown that stars fainter than those yet observed account for a considerable fraction of the total surface brightness of the SMC.
