I will discuss the status of theoretical models of galaxy formation,
with particular emphasis on the successes and shortcomings of models
based on the hierarchical clustering paradigm. Items to be discussed
include the origin of galaxy scaling laws, the link between QSO absorber
systems and forming galaxies, and the nature of high-redshift galaxies.
