It has become common in the last few years to apply standard population synthesis models to the interpretation of the observed properties of the most distant galaxies known, approaching redshift of 4 to 5. In this paper I will review the uncertainties introduced in the interpretation of distant galaxies by the assumptions made in these models concerning: stellar evolution, initial mass function, star formation rate, chemical composition, stellar libraries and extinction by dust.
