The argument is proposed that the intrinsic frequency-dependent polarization in blazars (BL Lac objects and OVVs) finds its most straightforward explanation in terms of a single rather than a multicomponent source model. In order to reproduce the observations, under the assumption that the emission mechanism is optically thin synchrotron radiation, both a well ordered magnetic field and an electron distribution with a sharp break or cutoff are necessary. Nonuniform pitch angle distribution and/or environments where synchrotron losses are important are both conducive to producing strong, frequency-dependent polarization. Reasons are put forth as to why such conditions are expected to occur in blazars. It is shown that both the models discussed are able to produce strong, frequency-dependent polarization, even when the spectral index changes by only a small amount.
