The authors compute the intrinsic surface brightness Se of 500 disc galaxies (0 ≤ T ≤ 9) drawn from the Second Reference Catalogue and show that Se does not correlate significantly with MB, (B-V) or type. This is consistent with the notion that there is a heavy selection bias in favour of disc galaxies with that particular surface brightness which allows inclusion in the catalogue over the largest volume of space.
