A detailed analysis is made of the relative abundance of H and He ions, particularly in the inner zone of the earth's radiation belts, and of such 'rarer' ions as O and Fe ions. The energy dependences of the relative abundances of energetic (E greater than 1 MeV/nucleon) H, He, and O ions in the belts are analyzed on the basis of experimental results obtained from measurement of their spectral characteristics on several satellites. It is shown that the formation of the energy dependence of He/H and O/H can be explained with a model providing for ion diffusion into the interior of the radiation belts with Coulomb losses taken into account under the condition that the total-energy spectra at the boundary are more rigid for the heavy ions and are determined by such parameters of the quiet solar wind as the relative concentrations of the individual ion compounds and their charge states.
