Reflectance measurements of asteroids are used to diagnose surface composition. While observations in a single bandpass are useful for astrometric or light curve purposes, multicolor observations, when corrected for solar colors and calibrated to stars whose colors are known, reveal the dependence of surface reflectivity on wavelength. This spectral signature, both the continuum and solid-state absorption bands, gives information about the surface materials.
