The prototype Penning Gas Imager PGI(1) and its principles of operation are described. Data taken with laboratory detectors and the space version of the PGI are described. This 120 mm detector will be flown as a focal plane imager on the soft X-ray Telescope (SXT), an objective grating spectrometer. A background rejection scheme is discussed and experimental data obtained in the laboratory are presented. Application of the PGI to ESA's X-ray Multi Mirror mission is considered.
