The post Einstein generation of stellar X-ray observations is discussed. Studies should include the origin of X-ray emission in early type stars; the dependence of the late type stellar X-ray emission on parameters such as age, rotation rate, and the depth of the convection zone; the determination of the boundary of the region of the HR diagram in which dynamo activity is present; the contribution of flares and winds to the mass budget of the interstellar medium and to the cosmic ray flux; and the geometrical and thermal structure of late type coronae. A moderate throughput X-ray telescope devoted to a full sky survey, such as ROSAT's, or a high spatial and spectral resolution observatory, such as NASA's AXAF, will advance knowledge in these areas. However, because of the low inherent stellar X-ray fluxes, a large part of the population studies relevant to the problems outlined above, and conducted to the faint limits as required, has to wait for the High Throughput X-ray mission.
