Properties of the X-ray spectra of 20 galactic supernova remnants (SNR) and 6 in the Large Magellanic Cloud are reviewed. Uses of such data, including deciding whether the emission is predominantly thermal or nonthermal, determining excitation temperatures, and studying SNR kinematics are considered. Instrumental requirements important for X-ray spectroscopy of SNR are treated. Of particular importance to studies of galactic remnants are a substantial field of view, capability at an energy high enough to mitigate the effects of interstellar absorption, and sufficient angular resolution to permit spectroscopy of spatially distinct components. The requirements which such considerations place on the XMM ESA observatory are discussed.
