The spectrum of the X-ray background is discussed. Although fairly accurately measured, particlarly in the 3 to 100 keV energy range, its origin is uncertain. It is very isotropic and its bremsstrahlung-like spectrum in this energy range indicates a diffuse intergalactic gas as the source, but this is probably ruled out on cosmological grounds. Point sources with measured spectra cannot make up the background as their spectra are too steep. Evolution of these sources is expected, however, at the low and high luminosity limits. A major task of XMM spaceborne observatory is to measure the spectra of faint extragalactic sources at energies above 3 keV in order to identify the kinds of sources which make up the background.
