It is noted that frequencies for some far-IR transitions in the OH spectrum may be so close together as to result in overlapping Doppler widths and that the use of standard two-level radiative-transfer theory for each of the overlapping transitions separately is therefore incorrect. A modified radiative-transfer theory is developed which allows for overlapping lines. The effect of line overlap on the source function of a given transition is examined, and it is found that the overlap effect provides amounts of radiative trapping in certain transitions ending on upper Lambda-doublet ground states which are significantly different from the amounts in related transitions ending on the lower states. Main-line population inversions in the ground-state Lambda doublet are computed for a range of incident-flux temperatures and H2 number densities. The results indicate main-line emission at 1665 and 1667 MHz as well as satellite-line emission at 1612 MHz.
