The possibility is considered of using cosmogenic isotopes in lunar rock and soil samples as a means for studying solar activity in the past. Theoretical and experimental data on the concentrations of the short-lived cosmogenic isotopes Mn-54 and Na-22 as well as the long-lived isotopes Al-26 and Mn-53 in various Apollo and Luna samples are compared, and formation rates are computed for these isotopes. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical values is found only for the short-lived isotopes. Possible causes of the poor agreement for the long-lived isotopes are considered, including variations in past solar flare activity, lunar rock erosion, and the exclusive action of medium-energy galactic cosmic rays. The long-term solar proton flux is estimated to be 100 protons/sq cm per sec with a characteristic rigidity of 100 MV, but it is concluded that the results obtained do not allow definitive conclusions to be made about possible variations in cosmic-ray intensity 3 million yrs ago.
