A hydrodynamic mechanism for the destruction of interstellar dust particles by cosmic rays is examined. This mechanism involves deceleration of a charged dust particle by instantaneous energy loss due to ionization and the excitation of elastic waves in the particle, leading to fragmentation into one or more pieces. The minimum energy loss necessary for dust-particle destruction by cosmic rays is estimated along with the maximum cosmic-ray particle energy required. The efficiency of the hydrodynamic mechanism is also evaluated for displaced atoms formed by cosmic-ray protons. It is shown that the probability of hydrodynamic destruction of interstellar dust particles increases for cosmic-ray nuclei heavier than protons (especially those with masses near that of iron nuclei).
