The inverse iteration method of computing complex eigenvalues and eigenvectors is applied to stellar stability calculations, and is found to be fast and convenient. The iteration procedure can converge even if the initial estimate of the eigenvalue is off by a factor of 5 or more. An accurate initial eigenvector is also unnecessary. The method was found to work well on a 450 x 450 complex matrix with a bandwidth of 9. Details of the equations and the method of calculation are presented. Results of calculations on specific stellar models are discussed in the following paper.
