If the optical variability of QSOs is due to a common shot-noise process, then the mean luminosity of any object should be proportional to its variance in luminosity. This hypothesis is tested with a sample of 20 QSOs for which historical light curves are available. It is evident that a single shot-noise model cannot account for all the data. However, 18 of the sample objects fall into one of two well-defined groups. In the context of the shot-noise model, this separation is simply interpreted as indicating two distinct shot amplitudes. The possibility that the two groups may be correlated with the optical image and with the radio spectral index is briefly discussed.
