Scientific paper

Ratios between gas mass and total stellar mass are examined for 14 young star clusters. The results are found to be in direct contradiction to the hypothesis of cluster star formation by condensation of a preexisting gas cloud. However, it is shown that these results support Ambartsumian's (1947) hypothesis that the stars and gas clouds in the clusters originated simultaneously from superdense protostellar matter.
