Previous analysis of observational data on the Faraday rotation of radio emission from extragalactic sources has indicated the existence of a large-scale universal magnetic field. This paper proposes that that large-scale field is associated with the topological structure of the universe. It is assumed that the observed anisotropies in topological gluing and field direction have a common origin and that the characteristic scale of the magnetic field determines the scale of gluing. It is shown that a specific pattern of source 'ghosts' arises in such a model and can be observed in principle.
