It is noted that forbidden O III lines yield practically the same gas density for most Seyfert galaxy nuclei despite the fact that the gas densities in such nuclei indicated by other spectral lines range over several orders of magnitude. An attempt to explain this leads to a model of a spherically symmetric nuclear shell in which the gas density decreases outwards according to an inverse-square law. It is shown that because of the inverse-square dependence and the existence of a critical density for forbidden lines, the maximum contribution to forbidden-line emission is made by a gas layer whose density equals the critical value for the forbidden O III line at 4363 A.
